I want to check voltage to a hot tub motor. There is a white, a red, a black, and a green going to the motor. ?
I think that I should get 120 volts if I probe white to black or white to red. Should I get 240v if I probe red to black? I know green is a ground. Also, are there any wires that I should not probe together with my volt meter?
ok what you have is a 2 speed motor the white wire is a common hot wire. the red and black are the 2 speeds pf the pump. one is low speed one is High Speed there is no common wiring code as per which one is which, red could be low speed or red could be high speed and black could be low or high speed. you would have to take the plate off of the end of the motor and look. and also look and the sticker on the motor to see where the wires connect and that will tell you where the speeds are. the common hot will almost always be on top then the red or black under them ! when you push the button on your topside controller that changes between low and high speed if you know the difference e than it will be easy to check voltage. you should have 240 volts between common = white and the red or black, depending upon which is low and high and the same for high speed you can unplug the motor and check the connector on the spa pack where you plug that particular motor into to see if you are getting high and low speed when you are suppose to !
